The Practice of Stillness

As a new month starts, my intention is to practice stillness at least once a day. This practice can show up for me in a multitude of ways and a lack of movement is not a requirement.

Perhaps it is staying in a particular shape for additional cycles of breath during my morning yoga practice, pausing in between tasks to practice three to five rounds of breath, stepping away from my phone and email for a few hours to be with myself or loved ones, taking a few moments to look outside my window and observe the gentle movement of clouds in the sky, or bringing my attention to an object directly in front of me for a few minutes.

The practice of stillness supports the observation of my sensations, feelings, and thoughts that arise within me. It reminds me to welcome them as they are with compassion. It invites me to explore them with curiosity so I can learn more from them. It gives me an opportunity to nourish them with care and love as I would a friend in need. It shows me that I am worthy of being in stillness and be as I am.
